** Opening Autumn 2020 – subject to Ofsted registration**
Red Moor School is a specialist provision positioned near Lanlivery in mid Cornwall. The school provides full-time specialist co-education for up to 35 children and young people aged 5 to 16 who have social, emotional, mental health and communication difficulties or associated behaviours that challenge.
Unable to achieve in a mainstream environment, our aim is to help pupils excel by providing a structured, nurturing approach, with students accessing a broad, balanced, engaging and extraordinarily rich curriculum.
With its large building and extensive grounds, Red Moor School is an environment where children learn to thrive both in the classroom and outdoors, helping them to be the best they can be.
Laura Horne – Headteacher
With a wonderful 16 years working in education settings, Laura started with her BA in Primary Education in Birmingham where she taught at an inner-city primary school for three years. Following her move to Cornwall in 2008, Laura continued her education journey working as a Key Skills Lecturer at Truro College before moving to the Alternative Provision Academies (APA) in Cornwall as the Acting Teacher in Charge at the New Horizons Nurture Group for a year and a half. Laura then completed her Master’s in Education and her NPQH whilst working at our sister school, Oak Tree School, where she was Deputy Head for 6 years. Laura’s vast experience sees her very well placed to lead the team at Red Moor School.
Laura is wholly committed to ensuring that every child and young person that enters Red Moor School experiences the opportunities and success they deserve, in both their educational achievements and their social and emotional development.
Laura said “We want every young person who comes through the doors at Red Moor School to believe that anything is possible. Then we will support them on their journey to achieve their dreams. Many children joining us will have sadly experienced nothing but failure in their previous educational settings. At Red Moor, our promise to our children is that we will deliver the education which is right and personalised for them. We will encourage them to push their own boundaries, provide an engaging curriculum, and motivate and inspire them to achieve. Our aim is to ensure that our children will experience success, be confident and have great self-esteem, so that when they leave us they have the same great opportunities as others as they move on to further education, employment or training.”
On entry to the school, Laura, the Headteacher, along with the teaching staff and Educational Psychologist, will undertake a thorough baseline assessment. This assessment will identify where children are in terms of their learning (literacy skills, numeracy skills and science) and will also assess emotional development. This initial assessment will inform how we work with each student and the results will be fed back to parents/carers and the local authority within eight weeks of joining the school.
At Red Moor School, our team will work with pupils, parents, carers and the therapy team to agree a shared view of what the best support plan is for every child. Our team includes Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Trained Counsellors and Educational Psychologists, as well as access to other types of therapy as required. Once a plan is in place, our onsite therapeutic interventions are embedded into the daily practice of the school, enabling each young person to build on their strengths and increase their resilience.
